Frequently Asked Questions
Over the last several years, I shifted my mindset around food and started to view it as the foundation and source of nourishment for my health. To me, food is medicine and it’s the major player in preventative health care. Through working with hundreds of client I have seen the true impact food can have. I’ve also seen a change with my kids as we have daily conversations about food and our bodies, how foods make us feel, and why we try to have a colorful plate at meals.
This is a subject that definitely needs some attention but here are a few tips to get you started.
- Make a list and have a plan before you go.
- Shop the perimeter of the store. By shopping this way, you avoid most of the heavily processed foods in the center aisles of the grocery store.
- Turn labels over! It’s common place now to have the front of packaging full of misleading information. For example, words like “Natural” have no true definition so flip that package over and take a deeper look. When we turn over labels and look at ingredients, we get a much better sense of what we might be consuming. Good general rules are if it has more than 5 ingredients or if you can’t say it, you probably should avoid eating it.
Well, first, I think it’s 50% luck of the draw! And the other 50% is probably how I introduced foods to them from the start. While pregnant, I rotated a variety of foods and added new-to-me foods, even ones that I had never really liked…looking at you cantaloupe! And continued on with that while nursing and when I introduced solids. I will dive much deeper into this topic, but for those looking for recommendations immediately….
- I recommend variety the sooner the better!
- Be a “one-bite” family! This means they have to take at least one bite of everything they are served. This helps create flavor exposures but also means they are more likely to be a polite guest at someone else's table.
Um…You’re never too old to do something you love! And I can do hard things! I also had an extremely supportive husband who helped me keep all the balls in the air and picked up the ones that I needed to drop for a bit. Although my life is still dictated by his career, work travel, and our moves, we were able to make it all work and get me to the school finish line.
